You're in a meeting. Someone mentions "RAG pipelines" and "fine-tuning." Another person throws around "agentic workflows" and "context windows." You nod. You take notes. But if someone asked you to explain any of it back? Honestly, you'd struggle.
You're not alone.
Most business leaders I work with, whether they're running startups through Founder Institute or scaling established companies, are sharp, strategic people. They can spot a market opportunity instantly. But the AI vocabulary is evolving faster than anyone can keep up with.
This glossary is your cheat sheet. No computer science degree needed. Just clear, plain-language definitions with a "why this matters for your business" angle on every term.

The Foundations
AI (Artificial Intelligence)
Computers doing tasks that normally require human thinking. Understanding language, recognizing images, making decisions, spotting patterns in data.
Why it matters for your business: AI is no longer a "nice to have." It's the layer that sits on top of almost every modern tool your team already uses, from your CRM to your email marketing platform. Understanding the basics helps you evaluate which AI features actually solve problems vs. which ones are just marketing fluff.
Machine Learning (ML)
Instead of programming a computer with step-by-step rules ("if X, then Y"), you show it thousands of examples and let it figure out the patterns on its own.
Think of it this way: you don't teach a child to recognize a dog by listing every feature of every dog breed. You point at enough dogs and say "dog" until they get it. Machine learning works the same way.
Why it matters for your business: ML powers the recommendation engines, fraud detection systems, and predictive analytics that many of your tools rely on behind the scenes.
Deep Learning
A subset of machine learning that uses many layers of processing (called "neural networks") to handle really complex patterns. It's what made breakthroughs in image recognition, language understanding, and voice assistants possible.
Why it matters for your business: Deep learning is the reason AI tools got dramatically better in the past few years. It's the technology behind everything from automated document processing to AI-generated content.
Generative AI (Gen AI)
AI that creates new content: text, images, code, audio, video. This is the category that ChatGPT, Claude, Midjourney, and similar tools fall into.
This is different from AI that only analyzes or classifies existing data (like spam filters or fraud detection).
Why it matters for your business: Gen AI is likely the type of AI your team interacts with most. It's what powers your AI writing assistants, image generators, and code-building tools. Understanding what it can (and can't) do helps you set realistic expectations.
Models and Providers
Model
An AI model is a computer program trained to process input and generate a response. You give it a prompt, it does some processing, and it produces an output.
Think of it like a very well-read intern who has consumed the entire internet and every book ever published. They don't always get things right, but they can produce surprisingly useful work when you give them clear instructions.
Why it matters for your business: When someone says "we're using GPT-4" or "we switched to Claude," they're talking about different models. Each has different strengths, pricing, and trade-offs. Knowing this helps you make better vendor and tooling decisions.
LLM (Large Language Model)
A specific type of AI model trained on massive amounts of text so it can read, write, summarize, translate, and reason in natural language. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama, and Mistral are all LLMs.
Most LLMs have now evolved into "multi-modal" models, meaning they can also process images, audio, and video alongside text.
Why it matters for your business: LLMs are the engines behind most of the AI tools you use daily. Understanding what an LLM is helps you understand both the capabilities and the limitations of these tools.
Key Providers You'll Hear About
OpenAI builds GPT models (which power ChatGPT), DALL-E for images, and Sora for video. They're the biggest name in the space.
Anthropic builds the Claude family of models, with a strong focus on safety and reliability. Claude is known for handling long documents well and following complex instructions.
Google builds Gemini (formerly Bard), deeply integrated into Google Workspace and Search.
Meta releases Llama models as open-weight (free to download and run), which matters if you care about data privacy or want to run AI on your own infrastructure.
Mistral is a European AI company (based in Paris) building high-quality open models. Relevant if EU data sovereignty matters to your business.
How Models Learn
Training / Pre-training
The process of teaching a model by showing it massive amounts of data. For LLMs, this means analyzing huge chunks of the internet, books, code, and more. The model adjusts millions of internal settings ("weights") until it gets better at predicting patterns.
Pre-training is the first, most expensive phase. It can take months and cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
Why it matters for your business: You won't train a model yourself. But understanding that training happened in the past and on specific data helps you understand why models sometimes have outdated knowledge or blind spots.
Fine-tuning
Taking a pre-trained model and doing additional, focused training on your specific data. For example, training it on your company's customer service conversations so it responds in your brand voice, or on medical literature to make it better at healthcare questions.
Why it matters for your business: Fine-tuning is one of the ways companies customize AI for their specific needs. If a vendor tells you they've "fine-tuned a model on your industry data," you now know what that actually means.
RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback)
A training technique where human reviewers rate the model's responses ("this answer is better than that one"), and the model learns to produce more of the preferred style. This is how models learn to be helpful, safe, and conversational rather than robotic.
Why it matters for your business: RLHF is why modern AI assistants feel so much more natural than chatbots from five years ago. It's also why different models have different "personalities." The humans who provided feedback shaped those behaviors.
Supervised vs. Unsupervised Learning
Supervised learning: You show the model labeled examples with correct answers. "This email is spam, this one isn't." It learns the pattern.
Unsupervised learning: You give the model data without labels and let it discover patterns on its own, like grouping similar customer profiles or detecting anomalies.
Why it matters for your business: When you hear about AI being used for customer segmentation (unsupervised) vs. lead scoring (supervised), you now understand the fundamental difference in approach.
Synthetic Data
Artificially generated data that mimics real data. Used when real data is limited, too sensitive to share, or when models need more training examples than exist.
Why it matters for your business: If you're dealing with GDPR concerns or limited training data in your industry, synthetic data is one path forward. It's also how companies test AI systems without exposing real customer information.
How Models Work (The Terms You'll Hear in Technical Conversations)
Transformer
The neural network architecture that made modern AI possible. Developed by Google researchers in 2017. Its key innovation is "attention," which lets the model look at all words in a sentence at once (instead of one by one) to understand context and meaning.
Almost every major AI model today (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama) is built on the transformer architecture.
Why it matters for your business: You don't need to understand how transformers work. But when someone says "transformer-based model," you'll know it means a modern, capable AI system, not something from the 1990s.
Token
The basic unit of text that an AI model reads and writes. Sometimes a token is a full word, sometimes it's just a part of a word. The sentence "ChatGPT is smart" gets split into roughly 5 tokens.
Why it matters for your business: Tokens directly affect cost and capability. API pricing is usually per-token. And the number of tokens a model can handle at once (its "context window") determines how much text it can work with in a single conversation.
Context Window
How many tokens a model can "see" at once in a conversation or document. Think of it as the model's working memory.
A small context window (4K tokens) means the model can only work with a few pages of text. A large context window (200K+ tokens) means it can process an entire book or a full codebase in one go.
Why it matters for your business: If you need AI to analyze long contracts, large datasets, or multi-page documents, context window size is a critical factor in choosing your model and tool.
Parameters / Weights
The internal numbers inside a model that get adjusted during training. More parameters generally means a larger, more capable (but also more expensive) model.
When you hear "a 70-billion parameter model," that's describing the model's size and complexity.
Why it matters for your business: Bigger isn't always better for your use case. A smaller, cheaper model might handle your customer support chatbot perfectly. Understanding this helps you avoid overpaying for capabilities you don't need.
Using AI in Practice
Prompt
The input you give to an AI model. A question, an instruction, a piece of context. Everything you type into ChatGPT or Claude is a prompt.
Prompt Engineering
The skill of crafting your prompts in a way that gets better, more reliable results. Small changes in how you phrase a request can lead to dramatically different outputs.
Why it matters for your business: This is one of the most practical AI skills your team can develop right now. Good prompt engineering can be the difference between AI output that's useless and AI output that saves hours of work.
System Prompt
A hidden, behind-the-scenes instruction that developers set up to control how an AI assistant behaves. For example: "You are a helpful customer support agent for [Company]. Always be polite. Never discuss competitor products."
Why it matters for your business: If you're building any AI-powered features into your product or internal tools, the system prompt is where you define the AI's personality, boundaries, and behavior. It's one of your most important product decisions.
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
A technique that lets AI search your company's documents, databases, or knowledge base before generating a response. Instead of answering from memory (which can be wrong), it answers based on your actual data.
Think of it as giving the AI an open-book test instead of relying on what it memorized.
Why it matters for your business: RAG is how companies build AI assistants that actually know about their products, policies, and processes. Without RAG, the AI is limited to its general training data and will likely make things up about your specific business.
Evals (Evaluations)
Structured tests to measure how well your AI system performs on specific tasks. Think of them as quality checks or unit tests for AI.
You define what "good" looks like, run the AI through test scenarios, and measure whether it meets the bar.
Why it matters for your business: If you're building AI into your product, evals are how you ensure quality. They catch regressions ("the AI used to handle this correctly, now it doesn't") and help you compare different models or approaches.
Inference
When a trained model actually runs and generates a response. Every time you ask ChatGPT a question and get an answer, that's inference happening.
Why it matters for your business: Inference is what you pay for in API pricing. Training happens once (and is the AI company's cost). Inference happens every time someone uses the AI (and is often your cost).
AI Agents and Automation
Agent
An AI system designed to take actions on your behalf to accomplish a goal. Unlike a chatbot that just answers questions, an agent can plan, break tasks into steps, use external tools, and work across multiple apps to get things done.
Think of the difference between asking a colleague a question (chatbot) vs. delegating a project to them (agent).
An AI becomes more "agentic" the more it can: act without being prompted for every step, make its own plan, take real-world actions (updating a CRM, sending emails), pull live data, and check its own work.
Why it matters for your business: Agents represent the next wave of AI productivity. Instead of using AI to draft an email, you'll use an agent to handle the entire customer onboarding workflow. This is where the real operational leverage comes from.
Tool Use / Tool Calling
When an AI model connects to external tools (search engines, databases, code execution environments, APIs) to complete a task instead of relying only on its own knowledge.
Why it matters for your business: Tool use is what turns a general-purpose chatbot into a useful business tool. An AI that can look up real data in your CRM, check inventory levels, or run a calculation is far more valuable than one that can only generate text.
MCP (Model Context Protocol)
An open standard (released by Anthropic) that makes it easy for AI models to connect to external tools: your calendar, CRM, Slack, codebase, and more. Before MCP, every integration required custom code. MCP standardizes these connections.
There are also competing approaches, like Google's A2A protocol.
Why it matters for your business: MCP is making it dramatically easier to plug AI into your existing tech stack. If your tools support MCP, connecting them to an AI assistant becomes a configuration task rather than a development project.
Vibe Coding
Building apps and software using AI tools by describing what you want in plain language (prompts) rather than writing code. In many cases, you never look at the actual code. The term was coined by Andrej Karpathy (former OpenAI researcher).
Tools like Lovable, Cursor, Replit, Bolt, and v0 are the main platforms people use for vibe coding.
Why it matters for your business: Vibe coding is fundamentally changing who can build software. Business leaders, product managers, and domain experts can now create functional prototypes and even production apps without a development team. I teach workshops on this at Founder Institute and for corporate teams, and I've seen non-technical founders go from idea to working MVP in a single afternoon.
Quality and Risk
Hallucination
When an AI model generates a response that sounds confident but is factually wrong or completely made up.
This happens because the model doesn't actually "know" facts. It predicts the most likely next word based on patterns in its training data. When it doesn't have the right information, it fills in the gaps with something plausible but incorrect.
Why it matters for your business: Hallucinations are the #1 risk in deploying AI for anything business-critical. Always have a human review AI outputs for important decisions. And use techniques like RAG (see above) to ground the AI in your actual data.
Benchmark
A standardized test used to compare AI model performance. Think of it like a university entrance exam, but for AI. Different benchmarks test different capabilities: coding, math, reasoning, language understanding.
Why it matters for your business: Benchmarks help you compare models when making purchasing decisions. But be aware that benchmarks don't always reflect real-world performance for your specific use case. Test with your own data.
Red-teaming
Actively trying to break or exploit an AI system to find safety problems before deployment. Basically, hiring people to stress-test the AI by trying to make it do things it shouldn't.
Why it matters for your business: If you're deploying AI in a customer-facing context, red-teaming should be part of your launch process. Better to find the edge cases yourself than have your customers find them.
Safety and Alignment
Alignment
Making sure an AI system's behavior matches human goals and values. The AI should do what you want it to do, in the way you want it done.
Why it matters for your business: Alignment isn't just an abstract research topic. It's practical. When your AI customer support bot goes off-script or gives advice that contradicts your company policy, that's an alignment failure. And it's your brand on the line.
AI Safety
Research and practices to make AI systems behave predictably and reduce the risk of harm. This includes technical work (making models more reliable) and policy work (defining what AI should and shouldn't be used for).
Content Moderation
Automatically checking and sometimes blocking AI outputs that violate safety rules, like hate speech, self-harm content, or dangerous instructions.
Why it matters for your business: If you're integrating AI into customer-facing tools, you need content moderation layers. Most AI providers include these by default, but you should understand what they filter and what they don't.
Infrastructure (What Your Tech Team Talks About)
API (Application Programming Interface)
The way software talks to an AI model over the internet. Your app sends a prompt to the API, the model processes it, and the API sends back the response.
Why it matters for your business: When someone says "we'll use the OpenAI API" or "the Claude API," they mean they're connecting your product directly to the AI model. This is different from just using ChatGPT in a browser. API access gives you control, customization, and the ability to build AI into your own tools.
Compute
The processing power (mainly specialized chips called GPUs) needed to train and run AI models. Compute is expensive, and it's one of the biggest cost factors in AI.
Why it matters for your business: Compute costs directly affect what you pay for AI services. When providers raise prices or when you scale your AI usage, compute is often the reason.
Open Weights / Open-Source Models
When an AI company releases the model's internal parameters so anyone can download, run, and modify it. Meta's Llama and Mistral's models are prominent examples.
Why it matters for your business: Open-weight models give you more control over your data (it never leaves your servers), can reduce long-term costs, and avoid vendor lock-in. But they require more technical expertise to deploy and maintain.
Temperature
A setting that controls how creative or predictable an AI's responses are. Low temperature = consistent, focused answers. High temperature = more creative, varied (but potentially less accurate) outputs.
Why it matters for your business: If you're using AI for factual tasks (data extraction, customer support), you want low temperature. For creative tasks (brainstorming, content ideation), higher temperature can be useful. This is a setting you can actually control in most AI tools.
Latency
How long it takes from sending a request to getting a response from the AI.
Why it matters for your business: Latency matters for user experience. If your AI chatbot takes 10 seconds to respond, customers will leave. Different models and providers have different latency profiles. Faster models are often less capable (or more expensive).
The Big Picture Terms
AGI (Artificial General Intelligence)
AI that is "generally" smart, not just good at specific tasks, but capable of performing a wide range of tasks as well as (or better than) the average human. Some people argue we've already reached this point. Others disagree.
ASI (Artificial Superintelligence)
The theoretical next step beyond AGI: AI that is significantly more intelligent than the best human minds in virtually every domain. We haven't reached this yet, and there's active debate about when (or if) we will.
Why it matters for your business: You don't need to plan for AGI or ASI today. But you should be aware that the pace of AI advancement is accelerating. The practical capabilities available to your business will look very different 12 months from now compared to today.
Quick Reference: Terms You'll Hear in Sales Pitches
These are the terms vendors love to throw around. Here's what they actually mean:
"AI-native" = The product was built with AI at its core, not bolted on as an afterthought.
"Grounded" = The AI has access to real data (usually via RAG) so it's less likely to hallucinate.
"Agentic" = The AI can take multi-step actions, not just answer questions.
"Multi-modal" = The AI can handle text, images, audio, and/or video, not just one type of input.
"Zero-shot" = The AI can do a task it wasn't specifically trained for, just from your instructions.
"Few-shot" = You give the AI a few examples of what you want, and it learns the pattern on the fly.
"Embeddings" = A way to represent text as numbers so the AI can search for meaning (not just keywords). This is the technology behind semantic search.
"Vector database" = A database designed to store and search these embeddings. It's what makes RAG work at scale.
What to Do Next
Understanding these terms is step one. The real value comes from knowing how to apply them to your specific business.
